The Risks of Coming Out

The risk of coming out or disclosing your sexuality can mean rejection from your family or friends. In some cases, disclosure to parents can result in many LGBT young people being thrown out of their home and facing physical and emotional abuse. A recent case highlights the problems shared by many young LGBT people:

a 14-year-old British male, after having disclosed his sexuality to his parents, was badly beaten by his father and was removed from the house for his own safety after neighbours, disturbed by the noise, called the police. The teenager has needed extensive support from the Social Services, by way of medical treatment, counselling, housing and support in continuing with his education. At the time of writing, he remains estranged from his family.

This unfortunately is not an uncommon occurrence, highlighting again the need for support, advice and guidance that is easily attainable.

There are a range of links to further information and help with all the issues above at the top of this page. We also have a links page for these and other organisations.
